Pheropsophus aequinoctialis est une espèce de coléoptère d' Amérique centrale et d'Amérique du Sud qui se nourrit de larves sur les œufs de taupes, mais qui, à l'âge adulte, se nourrit de larves.
Distribution
Pheropsophus aequinoctialis est l'espèce la plus répandue dans le genre Pheropsophus , avec une répartition qui s'étend du Yucatán ( Mexique ) au nord jusqu'au Pérou , en Bolivie , en Uruguay et aux provinces de Catamarca et Jujuy en Argentine au sud. [1]
Description
En plus d'être le plus répandu, P. aequinoctialis est également l'espèce la plus variable du genre. Sa coloration est similaire à celle des coléoptères Phaeoxantha aequinoctialis , P. klugii et Trichognathus marginipennis , et toutes ces espèces forment probablement un complexe mimétique mullérien .

Les adultes de Pheropsophus aequinoctialis sont nocturnes , se cachant souvent en groupes pendant la journée sous des pierres, des rondins ou des touffes d'herbes, mais émergent dans la nuit le long de sentiers sableux ou de plages fluviales. Comme d'autres membres de la tribu Brachinini , ils manifestent un comportement crépitant et produisent des quinones .
Les adultes de P. aequinoctialis se nourrissent parfois de matière végétale, telle que le fruit de la paume Astrocaryum , mais sont généralement des prédateurs , en particulier des grillons adultes du genre Scapteriscus . P. aequinoctialis a donc été considéré comme un agent de lutte biologique potentiel pour contrôler les espèces de Scapteriscus . [1] Trois espèces de Scapteriscus ( S. abbreviatus , S. borellii et S. vicinus ) sont des espèces adventives en Floride, arrivées vers 1900 en provenance d'Amérique du Sud . Pheropsophus aequinoctialis pond des œufs de 25 à 60 œufs près des terriers de grillons. Les œufs ont un contour blanc et rectangulaire, avec des sommets arrondis. Les trois stades ( stades larvaires ) suivants sont blancs, avec une capsule crânienne et une coloration plus foncée au bout des pièces buccales. Les larves du premier stade ont de longues pattes et cherchent les cavités d'œufs dans les terriers de cricket. Le second stade diffère nettement du premier - un phénomène connu sous le nom d' hypermétamorphose ; ils sont plus courts et plus larges, avec des pattes beaucoup plus courtes. La larve se nourrit des œufs des grillons, et reste dans le terrier jusqu'à ce qu'elle mue dans l' imago (état adulte). La pupe est de la forme typique des carabes .

Pheropsophus aequinoctialis a été l'un des premiers coléoptères terrestres décrits dans l' écozone néotropique . Il a été décrit pour la première fois par Carl Linnaeus dans son ouvrage Centuria Insectorum de 1763, sous le nom de Cicindela aequinoctialis .
